Bat Risk Assessments

We have over 10 years’ experience in undertaking ecology assessments and bat surveys for the purposes of site development, building restoration, infrastructure projects, habitat restoration and planning applications.

Bat risk assessments, sometimes referred to as bat suitability surveys or bat roost potential surveys, are the first port of call when assessing a site with regard to bats. This type of survey can normally be done in conjunction with an ecology assessment of the site and will focus on buildings and trees within the site boundary to search for evidence or field signs of bats or their use of features within the structure. The bat risk assessment also takes into account the suitability of foraging habitats for bats within and around the site including a desktop study and data search from the local bat group or environmental records centre.

These bat surveys are undertaken in accordance with the Bat Conservation Trust Bat Surveys for Professional Ecologists: Good Practice Guidelines by Natural England licenced professionals and can be completed at any time of the year. The findings of the bat risk assessment place the building or tree within a risk category and inform the decision for further bat emergence and re-entry surveys to confirm the presence or absence of bats within the structure.

We undertake the majority of our bat risk assessments within the north east of England including; Northumberland, Tyne and Wear (Newcastle and Sunderland), Durham, and Cumbria but do regularly travel countrywide.  If you wish to discuss a project or would like any further information, please get in touch using the below details.
